Minto Park's historical significance stems from the pivotal event that took place here in 1858. Following the Sepoy Mutiny, Lord Canning, the then Viceroy of India, chose this location to publicly announce Queen Victoria's proclamation. This declaration officially dissolved the East India Company's rule and brought India under the direct control of the British Crown. The park was initially named Minto Park in honor of the then Viceroy, Lord Minto. After India's independence, the park was renamed Madan Mohan Malaviya Park, paying tribute to the renowned Indian educationist and freedom fighter.
