History:
Vattakottai Fort was constructed in the 18th century during the reign of King Marthanda Varma of the Travancore kingdom. Eustachius De Lannoy, a Dutch naval officer who later served as a general in the Travancore army, played a significant role in designing and building the fort. The fort served as a crucial coastal defense post, guarding the region against maritime threats. It witnessed several naval battles and skirmishes during its active years.
