History:
Lamayuru Monastery, often referred to as the 'Tharpa Ling', meaning 'place of freedom', is believed to have been founded in the 11th century by the renowned translator Rinchen Zangpo. Legend has it that the site was once a lake, which was miraculously drained by Naropa, a famous Indian Buddhist scholar. The monastery played a crucial role in the spread of Buddhism in Ladakh and has been home to numerous eminent scholars and lamas throughout its history. Over the centuries, Lamayuru has witnessed various expansions and renovations, resulting in its present-day architectural complexity and historical significance.
