History:
The Maha Ganapati Temple's history is intertwined with the legend of the Atmalinga. It's believed that when Ravana was carrying the Atmalinga from Lord Shiva, Ganesha tricked him into placing it down while he (Ganesha disguised as a Brahmin boy) offered to hold it. Ravana, unable to lift the Atmalinga again, left it in Gokarna, and the Maha Ganapati Temple was built to commemorate this event.
