History:
The Maharana Pratap Sagar Lake came into existence with the construction of the Pong Dam on the Beas River in 1975. The dam was primarily built for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation. However, the resulting reservoir quickly transformed into a significant ecological site, attracting a diverse range of flora and fauna. The lake was named in honour of the great Rajput warrior, Maharana Pratap. Over the years, it has become a vital wetland ecosystem, providing a habitat for numerous migratory birds, especially during the winter months.
