The Dowleswaram Barrage has a rich history, originally conceived by Sir Arthur Cotton, a British irrigation engineer, in the 19th century. The original barrage, called the 'Godavari Anicut', was built between 1847 and 1852 and was a major achievement at the time. It aimed to harness the Godavari's waters for irrigation, transforming the region's agriculture. Over time, the original structure was replaced with the more modern Dowleswaram Barrage, which was completed in 1970. This newer structure continues to serve the same vital purpose of irrigation and flood control.
