History:

Auli finds mention in Hindu mythology as the place where the mythical sage Narada meditated. Historically, Auli served as a trade route and a grazing ground for shepherds. Its strategic importance was recognized during the Indo-China War of 1962 when it was developed as a military base. The potential for skiing was later realized, and Auli transformed into a prominent winter sports destination in India. The establishment of the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) further propelled its development as a tourist hub.

How to reach:

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, approximately 270 km from Auli. From there, one can hire a taxi or take a bus to Joshimath, followed by a ropeway or a short drive to Auli. Alternatively, one can reach Rishikesh by train and then continue by road to Auli.
